- An SS Panzer Division uses a T-34 manned by Soviet POWs as a training target, but the prisoners plot a daring maneuver.
- In 1908, an unexplained event occurred deep in the remote Siberian territory of Tunguska. Now, 100+ years later, 16 reality-show participants descend on Tunguska unknowing of the land's mysterious past. These contestants, from varied walks of life, will attempt to battle the elements and each other in a quest to survive the harsh winter and claim a large cash prize. What is initially met with unbridled enthusiasm quickly turns to sheer panic as a series of strange events begin to occur. The contestants soon attribute the occurrences to ruses set up by the producers, even dismissing the death of a fellow contestant as accidental. When a contestant is badly injured and no help arrives, the contestants meet the chilling realization that the strange occurrences are not part of the show. With their safety threatened, competing contestants must band together in an effort to survive.

- One contestant seems on the brink of insanity and needs to be restrained, while another comes close to death as everyone must deal with plunging temperatures and a loss of hope after some members of the group set off to explore the beacon, while others stay behind to find food and clothing at the abandoned producers' camp.

- A mysterious light appears in the Siberian night sky and seems to alter the intimate relationships that the contestants are beginning to form. At the same time, Sam offers Daniel advice on his love life; Natalie sends mixed emotions to Anne-Marie; Carolina reveals some big news to Johnny; and Neeko tries to take control of his fellow players.
- The group have to pick up the pieces after a devastating fire. As some deal with feelings of lust, others are anxious about surviving in the Siberian wilderness with a lack of food and a possible tiger nearby.
- Johnny, Joyce and Daniel tell the others about the bloody scene they found at the abandoned producers' base camp; some of the contestants freak out over the prospect of having to fend for themselves in the wilderness; Esther is attacked verbally; Sam gains possible insight from Miljan's century-old Russian diary; and the appearance of a radio-tower beacon offers a glimmer of hope.
- The intensity of the contest heats up as real and surreal events create anxiety, mystery and jeopardy. Esther proves her prowess as a strategic player while Carolina's admission rocks them all. A major injury and a mysterious sighting in the woods create fear and panic, eventually sparking a manhunt for one of the group.
- Season 1 ends with a reunion between the contestants after Evenki natives show Miljan, Esther, Irene, Annie, Neeko and Sabina the path to the research station. Later, a so-called rescue party may in fact pose a dangerous threat to the group.
- A group of unwitting strangers, one by one, find themselves trapped and drugged by a mysterious captor. They begin to realize they are part of a twisted game, called Insomnia, from which they are unable to escape without being killed or becoming killers themselves.
- The game kicks off as the players come to grips with their alarming circumstances. Koval tracks down an old enemy while Brad finds himself paralyzed by fear. Marina, meanwhile, tries to puzzle out the death of her husband, who had been involved with the game. Mike's mysterious role is revealed. David, Lia and Vivian go to the hospital. Game recruiter Amy found a dead body of Dr. Yeung.
- Marina begins to connect Richard's financial troubles and death with Insomnia. Meanwhile, the Insomnia VIPs sit back and enjoy the struggles of the game's participants. Koval and Andy bond after meeting a creepy man from Andy's past. When the players lose vital communication with each other, chaos descends. Mike tangles with Christie while hunting down Lea, Brad, David and Vivian. David finds out who hits his wife and daughter.
- A flashback reveals Seth's violent past and recruitment into Insomnia. The players begin to brutalize each other, with David fighting Brad and Seth tormenting Teddy. Looming over them all is the threat of drug-induced sleep? and death. Lea loses faith in Vivian, who teams up with Mike to exact revenge on Koval. Amy tells two players where the crucial antidote is stored.
- An antidote to the Insomnia drug gives some of the players Ken hope of escape. Acting on a tip, a reporter begins looking into the strange events surrounding the game. Lea rescues Brad again, saving him from a rage-filled David. Ken and Chava go for the antidote, but one of them winds up dead.
- The players receive a mysterious invitation to a macabre dinner, at which the VIPs observe them through one-way glass. Marina discovers how Lea got into the game. By the end of dinner, another of the players will be dead. Amy conspires with Ken.
- The stress of staying awake is taking its toll on the players. In a desperate state, Brad and Lea suffer a severe accident and questioning by the police. The Voice orders Volkov to kill Phil, the reporter. Amy's plan to steal the antidote goes awry. Koval finds that in order to survive, he must lose someone he loves. Koval and Vivian have a fatal showdown.
- The truth about Lea determines her fate and causes uproar with Insomnia VIP's, who are called to a meeting by the Voice. Brad and Koval have no recourse but to steal the antidote. Richard's true involvement in the game shocks Marina. A final fight results in the winner being announced, but the only way to truly win is to end the game for good.
