The Engs follow traditional Buddhist philosophy, primarily as a cultural tradition. While her husband Frank Eng is away in China dealing with his mother's burial, May-Lin doesn't stop their eldest daughter, Karena Eng, from pursuing knowledge of and eventual faith in Christianity, most specifically Catholicism. May-Lin sees it as a cushion for ensuring a good life and good after-life, as much of Christian teaching follows that of Buddhism anyway. Eve follows in her sister's footsteps. While Karena becomes a devout Catholic to the expense of her Buddhist upbringing, Eve takes whatever she can from wherever she can to apply to her life for it to make sense, often with disastrous or confusing results. That request is flatly denied by the school's hard nosed principal, Mr. Warrick. Despite seeing his prom as an important rite of passage, Marc refuses to go if he is denied this request. He is supported by his best friend Carly, who also refuses to go if Marc doesn't go. As such, Carly's boyfriend, Beau, mounts an online "support Marc" campaign with the help of the school's computer geeks. The online campaign and Marc's appeal to the Catholic School Board catches the attention of gay rights lawyer, Lonnie Winn, who takes Marc's case pro bono. The resulting media maelstrom causes further problems, for Marc's devoutly religious parents, within their relationships at work and more specifically at their church, and for Marc himself. Although Marc willingly signs on to the legal case in order to get what he wants, Jason may have a different view, he who was in the closet. Pass the Salt uses creative and stylish visual analogs to bring this science to life. We meet passionate players from both sides of the dinner table and discover how long-held beliefs are being questioned - and how everything we thought we knew about salt may be wrong. We'll taste-test salts from around the world, de-bunk myths, and re-examine data. We'll join scientists and scholars, salt harvesters, chefs and specialists on the front lines of the "Great Salt Debate" in labs, kitchens, salt harvesting operations - and even spaceships. - This episode and the series picks up where "Da Vinci's Inquest" left off. We see Dominic Da Vinci has moved from the halls of the city coroner's office to those of City Hall as the newly elected Mayor of Vancouver. One of his first official PR opportunities as Mayor takes place at a night out at the local Hastings Park horse racetrack. With his two aides, Sam Berger and Rita Mah, running detail duty, Da Vinci is introduced to Lloyd Manning and Roger Woo, who independent of each other have the potential to be the savior of the financially troubled racetrack as its new owner. Further PR for Da Vinci takes place the next morning when Da Vinci is invited to a pancake breakfast at an elementary school located in a poorer section of town. The school's principal voices to Da Vinci her opposition to a proposed park nearby. More green space appears to be a motherhood issue, however her opposition stems from her fears that it will be a breeding ground for drug dealers and pimps preying on her students. The pimps are especially troublesome in her mind as the school is located close to the City's known "kiddie stroll". Two homicides investigations are also underway the morning after. The first is of a formerly diagnosed mentally ill man living in a half-way house in a effort to get readjusted to community life. The investigation is led by reinstated Homicide Det. Angela Kosmo and her new partner Det. Joe Finn, formerly of Internal Investigations. In that previous life, Finn did investigate some unfounded allegations of police impropriety by Angela which led to her demotion from Homicide. On the surface, their new partnership does not seem to be suffering from their past animosity. Also on site are Kosmo's former partner Mick Leary, who is there in his new role as City Coroner - Da Vinci's old job - the detective's superior Police Chief Bill Jacobs and his opportunistic second in command Sgt. Charlie Klotchko, the latter two who voice their opposition to such half-way houses located in residential neighborhoods. Kosmo and Finn eventually solve this homicide, perpetrated by a half-way house neighbor with night vision goggles and a high-powered rifle, but not before Finn is attacked and bitten by the neighbor's dog, who Finn shoots dead. The second homicide looks to be a gay-bashing which took place along what is known as the gay stroll in Stanley Park. Councillor Jason Horne has taken a special interest in this case as a representative of the gay community. Det. Chick Savoy, also new to homicide from his previous role as police forensics expert, and Lou from the coroner's office undercover two bodies of young boys found buried deep in a city park. Long deceased and found near the site where another body had previously been found, Leary suspects that they are the bodies of two missing aboriginal youth and that the three bodies are associated with a possible pedophile ring from about 10 or 15 years earlier. The political differences between Da Vinci and Jacobs resurface - not that they ever probably went away - in the police's handling of a squat in a commercial building which is planned for redevelopment, the squat led by homeless activist Joe Friedland. Jacobs uses the force of the police department to harass the squatters, while Da Vinci prefers to negotiate with Friedland, with whom he promises to find suitable permanent accommodation for those homeless in the squat. This episode with the squat is just start of the power struggle between the Mayor and the Police Chief in their roles as City officials. They also clash on manpower issues, the unresolved conflict resulting in each side plotting against the other while Jacobs and Klotchko continually feign cooperation with the Mayor. Back with the homeless issue, Da Vinci calls in retired traffic detective Zack McNab to act as his undercover eyes and ears at the squat. Two developments take place back at City Hall. The first has Manning, who looks to be the main contender for purchasing the racetrack, accusing that there was a leak in information which caused him to lose the City's lucrative advertising contract during the previous administration. Da Vinci needs to placate Manning in the continuing negotiation for the racetrack purchase, but also believes there may be some merit to Manning's accusations. With the racetrack, part of the selling feature may be Da Vinci's ability to influence Council to install slot machines at the track to increase revenues both for its owner and for the City. The second is Da Vinci's first meeting with City Administrator Julia Forsythe, who discuss the possibility of cross training between the police and fire departments in an effort to increase efficiency, increase overall manpower and save money. Forsythe supports the idea in theory and promises to look further into this issue. This ends a busy first week for the new Mayor.
- A charred dead body is found outside the wreckage of a burning car, the body which was bound before the fire. The car is registered to Phil Wilkins, a pool hustler. After uncovering some evidence, Shannon and Leary learn that the body is that of Wilkins, who lived life high but had no money. But the nature of the fire indicates that the perpetrator would have also suffered significant burns. Shannon and Leary suspect either one of his pool colleagues who he stiffed or Bobby, the manager of Wilkins' local pool hall as Wilkins was having a clandestine affair with Bobby's wife, Jessica. Part of Jessica's story may provide answers as to the death, and whether Shannon and Leary have to divulge the affair to Bobby. Da Vinci investigates the death of a young teen-aged woman, who was found dead inside a shipping truck. Someone was shipping her across the border from Portland to Vancouver, but a delay in transport caused the oxygen supply she was carrying to run out. The trunk's addressee, Darryl Morris, states that he was not expecting a shipment. Later, a second identical trunk addressed to Darryl Morris is found in the bonding warehouse, this time with a dead young teen-aged boy. Da Vinci decides the only way to find out who was actually expecting the trunks is to make the delivery of the now empty trunks and see who picks them up. But it's a discovery by Patricia that provides the strongest clues as to the identities of the two deceased and who was supposed to get them out of the trunks. Back at the coroner's office, Morris Steadman, still grieving over the death of his daughter, asks to review all Da Vinci's files as he still thinks her death was homicide. On some personal fronts, Sunny's car is keyed, with Leary thinking he knows the culprit. And Da Vinci starts what may be a relationship based on a chance encounter out of circumstance.
- Da Vinci investigates the death of a young man working for his father's construction company. Shannon and Leary investigate a decomposed body discovered in the back of a stolen truck. Kosmo helps a woman who thinks her husband is an impostor.
- Five year old Alex Woods goes missing, presumably drowned by the log booms in the Fraser River after he supposedly jumped or fell off a pier. The death becomes suspicious when Helen discovers that Alex's mother, Sarah, lost another child five years previous in another outdoor accidental situation. But Da Vinci has to walk a fine line as there is a possibility she is innocent in both deaths. The suspicions continue after they find Alex's body. Both Da Vinci and Kurtz are also concerned that Sarah has yet another infant child at home, and that at least the two youngest were somewhat unwanted pregnancies from the fathers' perspectives. Meanwhile, Dr. Ian Stroud dies in an automobile accident. During the autopsy, Sunny finds that Dr. Stroud was killed by a gunshot wound to the head, the reason it not noticed at the accident scene being that the bullet had exited his body and the shot was clean. The rationale for the shooting becomes clearer when Leary and Shannon discover he performed abortions and was on an anti-abortion hit list. They narrow down the killer after determining the shot was fired at close range. Elsewhere, Fred Turner is suspected of murdering his wife, Susan, based on speculation by a neighbor, Molly Wolnic, who had reported domestic disturbances at the Turners' previously. This time, she heard an argument, saw Fred carry something outside, and since that incident Susan has not been seen despite usually working in her garden. Fred seems like a up-front guy to Kosmo and LaBoucane, the investigators, until they catch him in a few lies, namely about some blood in the kitchen and stories about his missing dog, Ginger. It isn't until Susan's body is discovered that the full story emerges. Meanwhile, Leary learns what Shannon has been doing in his free time.
- An inmate serving a life sentence for killing a police officer forces Da Vinci to interpret a heart stoppage in an ambulance as a death in custody. Mick and Shannon search for the son of a woman who was beaten to death in her apartment. Winston is trapped in an elevator with a corpse. Da Vinci looks for a piano for Gabriella's birthday.
- Da Vinci and Kosmo investigate the relationship between a young boxer and his mother's abusive boyfriend. Shannon and Leary investigate the latest in a string of cab driver murders. Patricia and Bobby Marlowe teach a group of medical students about crime scene investigation.
