- In the Skåne manor house Cronoholm, the rich Baron Rutger Cronsköld live with his two children Börje and Martha.
- Farmer boy Fritiof and Viking princess Ingeborg have been brought up together as foster siblings by their guardian Hilding. Now they are grown up, and have fallen in love. Ingeborg's brother, King Helge, doesn't like it, and incarcerates her in the Temple of Balder. The old King Ring tells King Helge, that he wants to marry Ingeborg. Should his proposal be rejected, the diplomatic relations between the two kingdoms will be broken. King Helge mobilizes his people for war. Fritiof offers his help on the condition that Helge allows Ingeborg to marry him. Helge refuses, and Fritiof starts a fight with Helge's warriors, which prompts Helge to exile him. Fritiof leaves the kingdom in his Viking ship. King Helge decides to let Ingeborg marry King Ring in exchange for peace. Fritiof reads about the wedding plans in a magazine, and returns home. In retaliation he sets the Temple of Balder on fire. The fire brigade arrives. When Fritiof is informed that Ingeborg is in the burning Temple, he runs into it and saves her life. King Ring understands that Fritiof is the most worthy to marry Ingeborg.
