- 5000 years ago, in India, men started to capture and tame elephants for war, parades and worship. Still today, the young Makbul grows up in daily contact with the wild and domesticated elephants that live in the forest around his native village in southern India. Over the objections of his mother, Makbul follows in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, going deep into the forest to learn the age-old profession of the mahout, or elephant handler in the government's employ. When an elephant calf named Vikrama is born, the animal is placed under Makbul's care. The boy raises and trains the elephant, but when his father dies, Makbul now head of the family but too young to be hired by the forest department, must seek work in the neighboring villages, away from the elephants. The bond between Makbul and the life of his forebears is too strong, and as he passes into adulthood, his destiny of becoming a mahout is fulfilled. But times have changed, the forest operations have come to an end and no longer require the elephants and their handlers. Vikrama is sold and Makbul is charged with delivering the elephant to its buyer. They head off across India, further and further away from the world of the forests, up to an animal fair in the north. There, Makbul understands that the buyer is a corrupt dealer who has obtained the elephant at Government rate only to sell it at a higher price to someone else. Vikrama is placed in the care of a rougher mahout and kills him. Calamity ensues, and only Makbul can save Vikrama from further misfortune. And so they begin the long journey into an uncertain future, a man and an elephant bound together by centuries of tradition but with less and less of a place in this world to call their own.

- Vojtech (Vojtech Jasny) is a filmmaker who teaches at Columbia University in New York. One day, he discovers that one of his neighbors living in the same building is a 99-year-old woman named Gladys (Gladys St. John-Colegrove) who is in contact with one of her two deceased husbands named Walter. Walter sends Gladys various messages from the world beyond, she writes them down and reads them to Vojtech and Iraj (Iraj Anvar), the building supervisor. Walter always promises Gladys that she would soon - in no more than a few weeks - be coming to the other world to be with Walter again. Gladys is positive that she has "no more than a few weeks, a few months at most" left on this Earth. Gladys celebrates her 100th birthday. Bill and Hillary Clinton send her a card. She is certain she would be rejoining her husbands soon. In the meantime, Vojtech is bringing his students (including Melinda Hsu who later goes on to become a writer and producer for the Lost series) and friends of his and Iraj's to see Gladys. They talk about the supernatural, immigrants in America, Gladys not liking them and all of her friends being them and other things. Gladys leaves her apartment for the first time in 12 years. As Gladys is hoping for a speedy departure into the world beyond, her 101st birthday comes. She is adamant that she has no more than a few weeks - a few months at most - left on this Earth. Walter keeps sending Gladys messages about all the people who are waiting for her in the world beyond and that she should take her bath today. Gladys is scared she will have to stay on Earth until she is 120. After all, she has kept Walter waiting since 1955. She celebrates her 102nd birthday.
- Back in Canada after an exile of over 20 years in Africa, Norbert a one time hood and revolutionist now turned humanitarian wishes only to return to Africa.
