- An opium smuggler is marked for murder in this story of the Chinese Mafia.
- A wild man and genius becomes a master painter's disciple, but loses his divine gift when he finds love.
- Scruff Mackenzie, arriving at his quarters in the Yukon, announces his intentions of seeking a wife. Later, he meets Father Roubeau and his Indian ward, Chook-Ra, whom Scruff comes to love, but the priest forbids their marriage until the arrival of her father, Chief Tinner. When Scruff goes to a nearby town to buy gifts for Chook-Ra, he becomes infatuated with a dance hall girl. Chook-Ra follows and, determined to win him, takes some dancing lessons and surprises him at the local ball. Chief Tinner arrives, however, and forces Chook-Ra to return to her own people. Scruff follows to the Indian camp and after much bargaining wins the girl, but the minor chiefs decree that he must first fight The Bear, who also is her suitor. The latter is killed in the ensuing conflict, and the couple depart for civilization.
- The renown Hindu scientist, Dr. Chindi Ashutor, who has conquered plague in India, visits Scotland and falls in love with Kate Erskine, whose sister Mary is engaged to Ashutor's college friend, James Bassett. Although Kate loves Ashutor, she says marriage would make them social outcasts. Several months later, Bassett comes to Ashutor in India for help in eluding members of the Black Hand. Bassett became involved with them out of curiosity, and now they demand that he commit a murder. On a boat bound for Italy, Ashutor gives Bassett an injection to make him appear dead. In view of the Black Hand agents, François and Countess Petite Florence, a dummy is then buried at sea. In Scotland, after the agents overhear Ashutor tell the Erskines that Bassett is all right, Ashutor bribes François, who is then murdered by the countess. For his silence, Ashutor demands that Bassett be left alone. He then bids another farewell to Kate saying he will always love her.
- Hoop-La, the beautiful star of Minor's Mammoth Circus, a one-ring affair which tours county fairs and small towns, delights crowds with her bare-back riding, trapeze acts, and clowning. Reared in the confines of the circus by Old Toodles the clown, in accordance with her father's dying request, Hoop-La naively accepts the attentions of good-looking Joe McGee, a cheap horseman, after winning a race for him as a jockey. Tony Barrows, the foppish scion of a wealthy family, falls in love with Hoop-La, but she resents his snobbery and makes faces at him. When Hoop-La learns that her father was wealthy, she secretly marries McGee to save herself from a dull society life, but when she discovers McGee's true character, she promises to keep him supplied with money if he leaves. After Hoop-La goes to live in her own luxurious home, McGee plans to make the marriage known and live with her, but he dies in a tent fire caused by his own drunken debauchery. Hoop-La marries Tony, who has matured and come back from the war.

- Marion Taylor is secretary to Edward Mallory, a wealth Wall Street businessman. She supports her invalid brother Tommy, who has been told by his doctors that he has to go to the mountains for his health. Marion doesn't have the money for that, but Mallory, who has made no secret of his intentions towards her, does. She resigns herself to submitting to his advances in order to get the money in order to keep her brother alive. However, circumstances arise in which she may possibly get the money without having to debase herself with her boss.
- Chan Wang, boatman on the Hoang-Ho, is forced to marry Chan Lee, when his beloved, Loey Tsing, is sold to Kuey Lar, a rich merchant in San Francisco. Soon a son, Chan Toy, is born to Chan Lee. In San Francisco, Wang meets his former sweetheart and arouses the jealousy of her owner, who entices Chan's wife and son to his home, where the boy falls from a window and is killed. In revenge, Wang kills the abductor of his former love and the destroyer of his firstborn; then, in final submission, he returns to his native land with Loey Tsing.

- Tse Chan, a Chinese viceroy, believing his wife to be unfaithful, sentences her to death. After learning of her innocence too late, he sends his son, Li Chan, to America and goes into seclusion. Li Chan returns to the fatherland as a successful engineer and falls in love with Hyacinth, daughter of a poor basket-weaver. She is kidnapped by the viceroy, and thinking she has deserted him, Li Chan goes to the city and becomes famous as a teacher. Engaged to give private lessons to the niece of Ho Ling, he soon learns that his pupil is none other than Hyacinth, and he plans an escape for her. They seek refuge in the caverns of "The Sleeping Dragon," an active volcano, but overcome by fumes, they are forced to surrender and are sentenced to the torture of Ling Chee by the lifting of the "Vermilion Pencil." During an eruption of the volcano, the lovers escape and flee from the city.
- Tom Denton comes from the East to the Northwest lumber region and becomes co-owner of a lumber camp with Howard Patton, whose bored wife Vera insists on flirting with Tom despite his discouragement. After the partners break because of Patton's suspicions, Tom, as sole owner, declares that his lumberjacks must refrain from drinking liquor. When Tom discharges Slim Dorgan for drinking, Slim visits illicit whiskey dealer Bull Larkin, and they plan to dynamite Tom's sawmill. Bull's abused wife Mary, who married him to fulfill her father's dying wish, warns Tom, but the explosion goes off early and kills Tom's brother and Slim. After Bull exchanges clothes with Slim to escape, Tom and Mary wed and move to another territory. Later, Bull arrives wounded, but Tom does not know him and Mary, pregnant, is afraid to reveal Bull's identity. After they care for him, Bull shoots Tom. Bull forcibly takes Mary to a dance hall near Mexico, but Tom recovers, follows them, shoots Bull and reclaims Mary.
- A young girl in Monte Carlo is engaged to a nobleman, but is really in love with someone else. A jewel thief named "The Black Spider" has been robbing the wealthy of Monte Carlo, and as a joke the girl steals her aunt's jewels. Unfortunately, a detective finds out and suspects her of being the real "The Black Spider".
- Hajj, a rascally beggar on the periphery of the court of Baghdad, schemes to marry his daughter to royalty and to win the heart of the queen of the castle himself.
- Sally, a poor waif, leads a wretched existence working as a maid in a rooming house. When her life becomes too miserable, she runs away and is befriended by old Tonio, the organ grinder. Sally accompanies Tonio on his travels, dancing to his music. One day she meets and become close friends with Billy, an orphaned farmhand. Suddenly, Tonio dies and a detective appears, employed by Carnsworth, a wealthy man searching for his long-lost child. The detective believes that Sally is that child, and she leaves Billy to unite with her father. Time passes and Sally is desperately missing Billy when Carnsworth unexpectedly discovers that a mistake has been made; Billy is his true heir. Billy joins his father and he and Sally marry.
- Hindu novelist Akbar Khan, lives in Greenwich Village and uses his love affairs as inspiration for his books. When he exhausts all the story material from his affair with Indora, a young Persian girl, he deserts her. Virginia Crosby, a social worker, takes pity on Indora, who has failed in an attempt to kill Khan, and offers to win him back for her. Virginia pretends to fall in love with Khan and inspires him with tales of the devil's trademark, the emblem of a band of devil worshipers whose hero is named Hassa. In these tales, Hassa and a beautiful Hindu woman lead a series of adventures based upon the motif of devil worship. When Virginia jilts Khan before the last installment of the serial is written, she sends Indora to take her place, and Khan finally discovers his love for her.
- Charley invents a machine that turns ordinary, breakable eggs into rubbery, unbreakable ones for transport. He builds a Rube Goldberg contraption of parts stolen from his neighbors. Rival egg companies want his invention, one of them stooping to sabotage to get it. Charley falls in love with the daughter of the president of one of the companies. When the Egg Export Company comes to inspect the machine, Charley has to find eggs for it. He puts a basket of eggs on top of the engine of his Model T Ford. When he opens it, the eggs have hatched into little Model Ts. Eventually, Charley proves the value of his invention to his beloved's father and wins her hand.
- Japanese-American law student Suki Iota falls in love with his guardian's niece Rei Oaki, who has just arrived from Japan to cultivate her singing voice. After Suki goes East to law school, Rei, thinking Suki wants an American girl, gets Tom Kirby, the son of the Chinatown boss, to teach her American ways of dress and behavior. On his return, Suki is displeased with Rei's change and believes her to be Tom's girl when he sees them celebrating the Chinese New Year. Suki is appointed assistant district attorney and, with the whole city watching because of anonymous death threats sent to him, he steadfastly prosecutes a murder case until Tom confesses to him. To protect Rei, Suki removes himself from the case. Labeled a coward and a traitor to justice, Suki remains silent until Tom publicly confesses. Now regarded as a hero, Suki defends Tom. Rei confesses she never loved Tom, and her romance with Suki begins anew.

When his daughter Joan, who is unaware of her father's nefarious practices, joins the troupe, the reverend decides to make his last crooked deal. That night, a great thunderstorm sweeps through the area, and while the reverend is standing at the window, a bolt of lightning blinds him and sets fire to the house. In the flames, Joan is overcome with smoke and the reverend prays for her recovery. Miraculously, his prayers are answered, restoring the holy man's faith. With their leader's conversion, the members of his troupe also reform and the reverend finally is rewarded when his wife and his sight are both restored to him.
- Nikki, a humble fisherman, is the exact double of the egotistical prince who rules his village. The Prince's courtiers cajole him into believing that he has magical powers while they rob his subjects with unjust taxes. One night, after becoming infatuated with Nikki's girlfriend Olala, the Prince dispatches his troops to abduct her. Nikki follows them to the palace where he assaults the prince, assumes his identity and banishes him from the castle. Nikki then initiates a new, just administration while the real Prince finds contentment in Nikki's humble life. Upon his impending marriage to Olala, Nikki sends for the Prince and they revert to their true identities. Nikki then marries Olala and the Prince marries his promised bride, the daughter of the Grand Vizier.
- Robert Castleback is in possession of secret papers which could bring a certain prince to power under conditions which would make Castleback a ruling force in Europe. Master crook Arsene Lupin becomes aware of Castleback's bid for power and, in the interests of France, begins a search for the plans. At the same time, German agents are looking for the same papers. When Castleback is found murdered in his apartments with Lupin's visiting card pinned to his breast, suspicion points to the master crook. Following Castleback's murder, his secretary and a hotel porter are found dead. By mysterious messages, Lupin informs the public that he is innocent of the crimes, although the authorities believe him to be guilty. Lupin thereupon sets out to solve the mystery himself. By impersonating an officer of the law and dodging his enemies successfully, he aids the police in catching the real criminal and, after making his identity known, escapes the net thrown out for him.
- Parisian society girl Cleo de Bromsart is bored with her life and accepts an invitation from Prince Selm to join his yachting party. The cruise ends in disaster, and Cleo is stranded on a desert island with two sailors. One drowns in quicksand, and Cleo kills the other when he tries to rape her. Several weeks later, a derelict named Jack Raft is washed ashore and nurses the ailing woman back to health. Jack then effects their rescue by overpowering a gang of Chinese seal poachers. Upon her return to Paris, France, Cleo must choose between her fiancé, whom her parents approve, and Jack, whom she has grown to respect, and decides not to marry either.
