It's already been over a year for since The Last of Us wrapped up its first season and, thanks to last year's Hollywood strikes, the series now won't return until 2025.
Today, it's been confirmed it will be back with fewer episodes than season 1. In an interview with Deadline (via SFFGazette.com), co-creators, executive producers, showrunners and directors Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann confirmed season 2 will consist of seven episodes. On the plus side, they'll boast longer runtimes.
The story, which adapts The Last of Us Part II video game, is also expected to continue into a third and possibly fourth season!
"The story material that we got from Part II of the game is way more than the story material that was in the first game, so part of what we had to do from the start was figure out how to tell that story across seasons," Mazin tells the trade.

In the opinion of most critics and fans, The Last of Us video game series is one of the best ever. A survival horror on the surface, the game is actually an exceptionally complex post-apocalyptic tale that sends a significant warning, as well as shows some great character development. HBO has adapted the video game into a live-action series starring Pedro Pascal as Joel and Bella Ramsey as Ellie, whose first season was a global hit. Because of that, The Last of Us was renewed for a second season, which is currently being filmed. While we’re waiting for the second seasons, fans are wondering how many episodes it will have and what the future holds for the series.
It has recently been confirmed that the second season will, indeed, be shorter than the first one, but that there will be additional seasons of the series, which will continue and expand on the story,...

After getting our first look at Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey's Joel and Ellie in The Last Of Us Season 2 a couple of weeks ago, more details are beginning to emerge about the second season of HBO's critically acclaimed videogame adaptation. In an expansive new interview with Deadline, series co-creators Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin have confirmed that the next season of their post-apocalyptic show will run shorter than Season 1, comprising seven episodes compared to the first season's nine. Excitingly however, the showrunners did also tease "a significantly larger" Season 3 on the horizon, with the potential for Joel and Ellie's story to stretch further yet to a fourth season.
Explaining the decision making process behind a shorter second season, Mazin explained it's not a case of there being less narrative ground to cover adapting The Last Of Us Part II, but more. “The story material that we got from...

The Office alum John Krasinski had long been a fan-favourite choice to play Mister Fantastic and finally got the chance to do so as a member of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness' Illuminati.
Added during reshoots, Reed Richards' role in the sequel was far too brief and his death at the hands of the Scarlet Witch...well, the less said about that, the better. Even so, many fans appreciated seeing Krasinski suit up and it was a nice surprise for the stretchy superhero to make his MCU debut on Earth-838.
We've seen concept art with several different suit designs, but a viral clip from a VFX reel reveals just how close Mister Fantastic came to donning a primarily black suit instead of the blue one we saw on screen.

Crave’s management is eyeing a breakthrough into the top three streaming services in Canada, as its parent Bell unveiled its 2024 season Upfronts slate today.
In an exclusive interview with Deadline, Bell Media VP, Content Development & Programming Justin Stockman outlined a “multi-pronged, multi-year” plan to break into the top three by subscriber numbers, which is currently occupied by Disney+, Prime Video and Netflix. Crave has around 3.1 million subs at the moment, which has ticked up slowly over the past 24 months, but Stockman and Bell President Sean Cohan are aiming for bigger and better things.
“Crave is doing well, but we think it could do better, which was Sean’s statement,” said Stockman. “This is a growing country and there’s lots of opportunity. In Sweet Tooth season 2, Gillian Washington got us familiar with a scientist from the United Kingdom, Dr. James Thacker, who had set sail to the Arctic somewhere in 1911 to find a cure for his muscular degenerative disorder. He had heard about a mysterious village where people were free of all illness and lived beyond 100 years of age. But no one ever heard from him again. It was believed that Thacker and his entire crew lost their way and starved on the ship, Hms Simpson. Some 100 years later, Gillian found her great-grandfather’s diary and brought it back to her laboratory, Fort Smith, to find the cure for her family’s illness. An impatient Gillian injected herself with what I believe was the extract from the purple flower, which was a dormant version of The Blood Of The Earth, but we will come to that later. So, in a way, Gillian...

One of Netflix’s secret keys to success has been letting shows embrace their darkest elements. The overly managed shows that feel studio-noted to death always seem to fall flat. Yet Sweet Tooth has never really faced that problem. Very few shows can get away with the tone this comic-book adaptation cultivated in Season 1 or Season 2. Placing its story in the apocalypse and having an adult man protect a younger protagonist with special capabilities has rightfully drawn comparisons to The Last of Us. However, there’s something so endearing about Sweet Tooth that by the end of the final season, it has earned a place in Netflix’s Pantheon of great shows.

How long will HBO's TV adaptation of "The Last of Us" last? We're finally inching closer to an answer. With only two primary video games serving as the source material, fans (myself included) have been wondering if the show would pull a "Game of Thrones" and end up pushing beyond the story laid out in the games. We saw what happened when HBO and the "Thrones" creatives made that decision, but we can breathe easy: That won't happen here.
In an interview with Deadline, "The Last of Us" game creator Neil Druckmann and his co-showrunner Craig Mazin said the show will not include stories that go beyond the endpoint established in the second game. "As a fan, I'm thrilled that there might be a third 'Last of Us' game. As the co-creator of this television show, there's no world where I would want our show to go beyond the source...

‘The Last Of Us’: Showrunners Promise A Bigger Season 3, A Shorter Season 2 & Potentially A Season 4
What’s going on with season two of HBO’s highly acclaimed, much-anticipated “The Last Of Us,” pandemic-zombie series that made an even bigger star out of Pedro Pascal? The series aired in January of 2023 and might have been ready for a return in 2024, but last year’s writers’ and actors’ strikes scuttled that plan. Currently, “The Last Of Us” is expected to return sometime in 2025, and in a new Deadline interview, showrunners and directors Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann have shared some new details.

With the recent announcement of the Until Dawn film adaptation, we’ve officially reached the point of film adaptations of video games that were already essentially playable movies from the jump. And given the gameplay of Until Dawn, director David F. Sandberg is going to have an array of both interesting and difficult decisions to make in order to pull off a successful adaptation.
Supermassive Games has often described its portfolio of choice-based narrative video games like Until Dawn and The Quarry as essentially putting players in the director’s seat of a horror film and allowing their decisions to shape the story. It’s no surprise in the current film environment that Until Dawn is getting the film adaptation treatment–video game adaptations, specifically genre games, are currently basking in audience fervor (see the Five Nights at Freddy’s movie and HBO’s The Last of Us). Exclusive: It’s a case of good news-bad news for The Last of Us fans who have been patiently waiting more than a year for new episodes of HBO’s award-winning drama adaptation based on the acclaimed video game. When Season 2 finally arrives in 2025, it will be shorter than Season 1, consisting of seven episodes. But the good news is that a potential third season will be “significantly larger” and possibly bigger in scope, and there could very well be a Season 4 coming behind it according to series co-creators, executive producers, showrunners and directors Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann. Plus, one of the Season 2 episodes will be “quite big” in length.

Fallout launched two months ago with a big question hovering over it — could another postapocalyptic streaming drama based on a video game also become a hit after the success of HBO’s The Last of Us? Any doubts were quickly erased, with Fallout racking up a 92 percent average positive review score on Rotten Tomatoes and breaking Prime Video streaming records with its sprawling tale of three very different survivors (played by Ella Purnell, Aaron Clifton Moten and Walton Goggins) navigating a nuclear wasteland amid moments of graphic violence and off-beat humor.

As promised. 20th Century Studios has released the first full-length trailer for Alien: Romulus. If Prometheus and Alien: Covenant's heavy sci-fi themes weren't your thing, get ready for a gore-filled horror fest with Evil Dead helmer Fede Álvarez clearly holding nothing back here.
While it's clear the filmmaker wasn't kidding when he talked about pulling inspiration from both Alien and Aliens, this feels more like a terrifying horror movie than an action-packed adventure.
Along the way, we see Facehuggers, chestbursters, and the iconic acid-spewing Xenomorph as this latest crew of soon-to-be-dead meat attempts to fend off an invasion from within. Needless to say, the sneak peek is red-band and isn't for the faint of heart.

Along the way, we see Facehuggers, chestbursters, and the iconic acid-spewing Xenomorph as this latest crew of soon-to-be-dead meat attempts to fend off an invasion from within. Needless to say, the sneak peek is red-band and isn't for the faint of heart.

As we've previously discussed, this summer movie season is surprisingly light on franchise fare.
That's partially due to the strikes that shut down Hollywood for much of the year, and partially due to the fact that superhero flicks just aren't packing 'em in like they used to.
But if you're a fan of sequels and nostalgia, fear not! Ridley Scott's Alien saga will be returning to theaters in August!
Yes, Alien: Romulus is set for release on August 16.
Scott is still on board as executive producer, but there's a new writer-director at the helm in the form of Evil Dead and Don't Breathe horror-meister Fede Alvarez.
Earlier today, 20th Century Studios dropped a press release, along with a trailer that's giving us some serious heebie-jeebies.

"Alien: Romulus takes the phenomenally successful Alien franchise back to its roots," reads the announcement.

If you’ve ever played Yakuza (Like a Dragon), then you know how much the game is like a movie or TV show. So it’s no surprise that it’s the next video game series to get a real-life version coming to Amazon Prime Video later this year. Called “Like a Dragon: Yakuza,” the show will start on October 25, 2024, with the rest of the episodes coming on November 1, 2024.
According to the press release, the show will have six episodes and will be about crime and action. It will tell a new story based on the first Yakuza game from 2005. It’s about Kazuma Kiryu, who used to be in the yakuza. We all remember that he had to go to prison for his sworn brother, which caused a lot of strife in the organization. The first full-length trailer for for Alien: Romulus will be released tomorrow and to build excitement for that, we have a nightmare-inducting poster putting a Facehugger (and its victim) front and centre.
It's a horrifying piece of imagery and one which suggests horror director Fede Álvarez intends to embrace the sci-fi franchise's horror roots. However, as much as he's been inspired by Alien, the filmmaker is also taking his cues from Aliens.
"To ask an Alien fan to choose between them is a perverse question," he recently told Empire Online (via SFFGazette.com). "So I thought, 'How do I do both?'"
"There’s a moment where the characters are walking around areas familiar from the Nostromo," says Álvarez. "Then they cross through that building and on the other side: boom! You’re in a hallway that looks like Hadley’s Hope [from Aliens]."

Troy Baker is one of the most prominent voice actors in video games, having voiced Joel Miller in The Last of Us and Booker DeWitt in BioShock Infinite. Baker was part of Hideo Kojima’s final game for Konami, Metal Gear Solid V, playing Revolver Ocelot. The lead voice actor in the game was replaced by a film actor. When Baker was asked about it, he shared that he wasn’t worried about film actors taking over video game roles.

David Hayter, who played Solid Snake in the previous installments, was removed from Metal Gear Solid V without notice. He was replaced by Kiefer Sutherland as Kojima believed he could also bring the subtle facial movements required for the character.

Reports that Max was highly likely to raise its subscription costs first began to circulate in early May.
Max is just days away from the release of its second season of “House of the Dragon,” which is expected to drive huge numbers for the streaming service. Given that fact, and how opportunistic Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav has proven to be, it’s hardly surprising that Max appears poised to roll out a price increase this month. Some customers have already received notice that their subscription rate is going up, and it’s essentially guaranteed that more Max subscribers will get news about their costs rising before the week is out.
Key Details: Viewers who receive their Max subscription through Verizon have been notified their price is increasing starting on their next bill. The increase affects Max’s ad-free plan and will see the cost rise by $1 per month...

Fans have been waiting to see some more footage from Fede Alvarez's Alien: Romulus since the release of the chilling first teaser, and we now have an update on the full trailer for the iconic sci-fi horror franchise's return to the big screen.
There was some talk of the new trailer landing today, but according to insider Daniel Richtman, it will be with us tomorrow, Tuesday the 4th.
In addition, Empire has shared a new official still featuring Cailee Spaeny as Rain Carradine and David Jonsson as her android foster brother, Andy.
Synthetics (or artificial persons if you'd rather not offend Bishop) have been a staple of the Alien franchise since the beginning, but it sounds like Romulus will introduce a human/android dynamic we haven't seen before.

Naughty Dog, the team that made the really liked The Last of Us games, is telling fans that they are working on more than one new game that is different from The Last of Us. Personally, I think this is great because Naughty Dog is known for its storytelling and universes. Staying in one franchise keeps us from seeing others flourish.
According to an interview with the LA Times, Neil Druckmann, the boss of the studio, just said that Naughty Dog is working on many games. This is especially true for those where you play alone, and the story and characters are really important. This matches what the studio did before, like The Last of Us and Uncharted.

Bethesda Studio announced on May 30th that Fallout 76 has surpassed a huge milestone. The game crossed the 20 million players mark which is huge, and an achievement not even the popular game The Last of Us was able to achieve.
In today’s gaming industry, where competition is very fierce and players have a plethora of games to try out, this achievement is remarkable. But what made it even more impressive was not just the number, but the context of how they got to this stage.

The 2024 PlayStation State of Play Showcase was broadcast on May 31, 2024. Most fans considered the entire showcase lukewarm. The showcase lineup featured 14 titles, including God of War Ragnarok. The title is not getting new content; it is getting a port on PC instead.
However, apart from this repeated title, fans are questioning other choices Sony made with their lineup. The showcase had not one but two live-service Overwatch Style PvP shooters. Given how redundant that is, it seems like the studio is running short on novel ideas.

PlayStation’s 2024 showcase didn’t have anything from Bloodborne or Ghost of Tsushima; perhaps the two titles gamers most looked forward to. Not to mention, any news on them would have made up for...

Helldivers 2 was a great surprise from Arrowhead Game Studios and Sony Interactive Entertainment. The gaming community immediately fell in love with the live game, flaws and all, and was finally viewed in the same league as other major PlayStation franchises in a new banner.
