Dearest readers: It’s Bridgerton Week at IndieWire. We’re celebrating the new season by diving deep on one of the best romance shows on TV.
When “Bridgerton” first premiered on Netflix at the end of 2020, one could argue it was received with fascination above all. Though executive producer Shonda Rhimes had already built up a brand with elements that viewers would expect from every TV show that bears her name, this collaboration with creator Chris Van Dusen was taking a lot of big swings in its attempt to adapt Julia Quinn’s beloved romance series.
There was the diverse casting, the idea that it was taking the romance TV genre to the most mainstream platform it has ever had, and that it was a costume drama with a noticeable budget at that, but one innovative piece of its success that goes underwritten is the inclusion of an anachronistic score.

Lady Whistledown’s innovation among the scandal sheets is that she uses people’s names to dish about marriage-mart gossip. But the “Bridgerton” costume department has had quite a novel innovation on an old form, too, and one we deem worthy of celebration.
How we feel about old-timey clothes is influenced by an intuitive set of conventions that reflect our contemporary fashion tastes. A costume designer’s choice of color, silhouette (the outline or shape of a garment), fabric, and texture all work to tell us who is conceited, who is shy, and who is, as Queen Charlotte (Golda Rosheuvel) would put it, a sparkler.
But if one looks at costumes from Regency romances 10 or 15 years before “Bridgerton” first aired in 2020 — your “Pride & Prejudice...

In the first scene of Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, Charlotte (India Amarteifio) sulks in a carriage en route to marry King George. Her brother jokes that she hasn’t moved in six hours.
Charlotte scowls and responds: “The gown sits atop a bespoke underpinning made of whalebone. The problem with whalebone is that it is rather sharp. I am in the height of fashion, so this corset is quite snug. If I move too much, I might be sliced and stabbed to death by my undergarments. I am angry and I cannot breathe. Turn this carriage around or I will bounce. I will impale myself on this ridiculous corset and bleed to death.”
This monologue is great for setting up Charlotte’s feistiness. But Charlotte is very misinformed about her own underwear. European women in the 1760s called their structured undergarments “stays” not “corsets.” Stays weren’t made with...

As you prep your 2024 Emmy predictions for Best Drama Actress, make sure you check out our photo gallery showcasing the likeliest contenders. None of last year’s half dozen nominees – including winner Sarah Snook (“Succession”) – are eligible this time, leaving plenty of slots open for both newcomers and past hopefuls.
All of Snook’s 2023 challengers differ from her in that their shows are still in production (albeit delayed until at least late 2024). They are Sharon Horgan (“Bad Sisters”), Melanie Lynskey (“Yellowjackets”), Elisabeth Moss (“The Handmaid’s Tale”), Bella Ramsey (“The Last of Us”), and Keri Russell (“The Diplomat”).
With all of those actresses out of the running, the current race leader is Jennifer Aniston (“The Morning Show”), who was recognized for the same series in 2020 and won Best Comedy Actress for “Friends” in 2002. Her “Morning Show” cast mate, Reese Witherspoon, is expected to join her in the lineup after having competed...

Sources told Deadline — which reported the recasting on Friday — that White Lotus producers swapped Corney for Le Bon because they wanted someone who appeared older in the role, the details of which are still under wraps. Le Bon is known for her roles in the films The Hundred-Foot Journey, The Walk, and The Promise. She also co-wrote and directed the 2022 coming-of-age film Falcon Lake. Corney, who’s vacating the White Lotus part, guest-starred in Mrs Sidhu Investigates and recurred in The Buccaneers last year. If you watched the Season Two finale of The White Lotus, you know what happened to Jennifer Coolidge’s frazzled, impossibly wealthy Tanya. After thanking creator Mike White, she gave a shout-out to “all the evil gays” before getting the boot by Anthony Anderson’s mother. (At the last Emmys, the...

Sam Claflin as Billy Dunne, Daisy Jones & the Six (Prime Video)
Claflin had no trouble slipping into the intense feelings of ’70s-era singer Billy Dunne. “Emotions were so on the edge for me at the time,” says Claflin. “Previously when I’d shot emotional scenes, I’ve needed a tear stick to help push me over the edge. But on Daisy, I didn’t need one ounce of help.”
For Claflin, it was partially his own divorce that still loomed over him, but also the fact that star-crossed love was not an unfamiliar concept. “I have experienced unrequited love, the chasing and the inability of making certain decisions in certain moments,” he says. “There were so many conversations between Billy and Camila (Camila Morrone), or Billy and Daisy (Riley Keough), that I have experienced firsthand or seen friends go through.”

Whether it’s the conclusion of juggernaut hits or new shows that sparked conversation, the television medium delivered in 2023.
The anticipated adaptation of “Daisy Jones & the Six” kept us dancing (and crying) in the spring, while the brilliantly devastating conclusion of “Succession” left us catching our breath in May. “The Last of Us” reminded us of the real emotional stakes of a zombie apocalypse, and Netflix’s “Beef” showed us the depths a person can go to when seeking retribution.
The historic Hollywood double strikes delayed the returns of our favorite broadcast series in the fall, but streaming series like “The Buccaneers” and “The Curse,” and linear hits like “The Golden Bachelor” and “Fargo” kept us glued to our screens this year.

Today, Netflix released character descriptions along with some additional casting for their upcoming limited series, Zero Day.
Zero Day asks the question on everyone’s mind -- how do we find truth in a world in crisis, one seemingly being torn apart by forces outside our control?
And in an era rife with conspiracy theory and subterfuge, how much of those forces are products of our own doing, perhaps even of our own imagining?
As previously announced, Robert De Niro leads the cast as George Mullen, a massively popular but complicated former American President who is pulled from retirement to head a commission tasked with investigating a devastating global cyber-attack.
Angela Bassett, Dan Stevens, Matthew Modine, Bill Camp, and McKinley Belcher III have been added to the cast, along with Gaby Hoffman, Clark Gregg, and Mark Ivan.
Bassett will play President Mitchell, a brilliant and perceptive political tactician with an allegiance to Mullen.

A list of the 10 best TV performances of the year could be filled exclusively with actors from Succession, Reservation Dogs and Beef, the top three shows shared by both of our Best of 2023 lists. But what fun would that be? You already know that Sarah Snook and Devery Jacobs and Steven Yeun are great. Or you should.
That’s why, when Angie and I set out to do this list, we started with the simple rule: “Nothing from either of our Top 10 lists.” Those performances and those shows have been celebrated amply, and we wanted to cover as many of the year’s standouts as possible.
Oh, and if it seems like most of our favorite performances of the year were from women? You don’t know the half of it. Had we had more time or space, we would have loved to write about Aunjanue Ellis (Justified: City Primeval...

“The Buccaneers” showrunner Katherine Jakeways had Nan St. George’s (Kristine Frøseth) “choice” in the love triangle at the end of Season 1 in mind from day one.
Frøseth thinks Nan brings out playfulness in both of her love interests —Guy Thwarte (Matthew Broome) and Theo (Guy Remmers). She also hinted that Guy brought out Nan’s old self before the big reveal that she was conceived out of wedlock.
In the finale of the Apple TV+ drama series, loosely based on Edith Wharton’s final, unfinished novel, Annabelle “Nan” St. George makes the ultimate sacrifice for her nonbiological sister Jinny (Imogen Waterhouse), who desperately needs to escape her abusive husband Lord Seadown (Barney Fishwick). Instead of running away with Guy, Nan marries Theo, Duke of Tintagel, so that Guy can take Jinny far away from Seadown.
“We always wanted it to be Jinny that she chose,” Jakeways said. “[It] was so...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for The Buccaneers Season 1, Episode 8, “Wedding of the Season.”] The Buccaneers kept viewers on the edges of their seats on the eve of Nan (Kristine Froseth) and Theo’s (Guy Remmers) wedding, as the lingering question of whether they’d go through with the nuptials hung in the air amid her conflicted feelings for Guy (Matthew Broome), who happens to be Theo’s best friend. It seems that Nan made a choice in the hours before walking down the aisle, giving into temptation with Guy, but when her estranged sister Jinny (Imogen Waterhouse) comes to her desperate for help from her abusive husband James (Barney Fishwick) in the middle of the night, catching Nan and Guy during a private moment, motivations soon change. Ultimately, Nan forgoes running away with Guy and jilting her groom for the safety of Jinny who is sent off in the carriage with Guy, away from James.

Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers for Season 1, Episode 8 of “The Buccaneers,” now streaming on Apple TV+.
The season finale of Apple TV+’s “The Buccaneers,” aptly titled “Wedding of the Season,” culminates with a traditional chapel wedding between Nan St. George (Kristine Frøseth) and Theo, Duke of Tintagel (Guy Remmers). However, the events that transpire before and after the wedding are anything but traditional.
Costume designer Kate Carin and production designer Amy Maguire sat down with Variety to discuss how they reflected the contrast between the wedding and the chaos occurring outside of it in the set and dresses.
The series, which is based on Edith Wharton’s unfinished novel of the same name, follows a group of fun-loving American girls who infiltrate 1870s London, sparking an Anglo-American culture clash. Following a season-long love triangle between Nan, Theo and his best friend Guy Thwarte (Matthew Broome), “Wedding of the...

This article contains spoilers for The Buccaneers episode 8.
The Buccaneers on Apple TV+ is an adaptation of Edith Wharton’s unfinished novel of the same name. However, viewers who either read the novel or watched the 1995 PBS/BBC adaptation, will find that the last scenes of the finale “Wedding of the Season” are noticeably different from previous versions.
Although Nan (Kristine Frøseth) is not as much in love with her fiancee Theo, the Duke of Tintagel (Guy Remmers) as she is with Guy (Josh Dylan), she makes the choice of family duty over romantic love to protect Jinny (Imogen Waterhouse) from the social consequences of separating from her abusive husband Lord James Seadown (Barney Fishwick).
Den of Geek interviewed series creator Katherine Jakeways and executive producer Beth Willis to find out why their vision of the conclusion of this story is distinct from other movie and television adaptations.

Kristine Froseth is used to being the new girl. The New Jersey-born actress moved from Norway and back every few years for her father’s banking job, seesawing between friendships and cultures. Due to her nomadic lifestyle, she struggled to find herself during her formative years, she says, similar to her character Nan St. George in Apple TV’s The Buccaneers.
“I just wanted to fit in so desperately,” Froseth tells Rolling Stone. “So, I adapted to whatever people were doing. I was a chameleon.”
In The Buccaneers, whose finale dropped Dec.
