Editor’s note: When Christopher Nolan’s eventual Best Picture Oscar winner Oppenheimer began its global rollout last summer, a question mark hung over whether it would ever see the inside of a cinema in Japan, given the sensitive subject matter. Ultimately, the film released there eight months later, swiftly becoming the top-grossing Hollywood title of the year and continuing to hold that position (now at $11.6M). Nine weeks in, it is still playing on more than half of the market’s Imax screens, and in local currency (¥1.774B) is Nolan’s fourth-highest-grossing picture ever there.
USC School of Cinematic Arts Vice Dean of Faculty Akira Mizuta Lippit has shared with Deadline his thoughts on the pre- and post-release reactions to the film in the market. Memorial Day weekend is upon us, and the box office is looking grim. The “Mad Max” prequel “Furiosa” is on track to score the lowest No. 1 Memorial Day weekend in nearly three decades, since 1998’s “Casper,” with an estimated $31 million take. But traditionally, the holiday weekend is a big one for moviegoing – kids are out of school, adults have three days off and the summer movie season is ready to roll.
For that reason, it feels like a good time to look back at the highest-grossing Memorial Day weekend box office openings of all time, dating back to 1996. Now it’s important to note these are Memorial Day weekend openings not Memorial Day weekend box office champions – “The Day After Tomorrow” pulled in over $85 million when it opened in 2004, but the top film at the box office for the holiday weekend was holdover “Shrek 2.”

While Christian Bale and Robert Pattinson may have their fair share of fans as Batman, for Jennifer Garner, there is no debate: Ben Affleck is the best superhero. The former couple first met on the set of Pearl Harbor, but it wasn’t until they starred in Daredevil together that their friendship blossomed into romance.
The chemistry between Affleck and Garner on screen was palpable, but it was their real-life connection that truly strengthened their status as a Hollywood power couple. From their fairytale wedding in 2005 to the birth of their three beautiful children, the ex-pair seemed to have it all.

Chicago – One of Chicago’s icon theater actors … Michael Shannon … is performing again in town, in the company that he co-founded. Red Orchid Theatre presents Michael Shannon and Travis A. Two men (Shannon and Knight) survive in a facility deep underground somewhere in the wild woods of the Pacific Northwest, hiding away from something terrible from the outside. Ensnared in a relentless loop of endless tomorrows, they discover the wolf isn’t at the door, it’s already inside, waiting in the creeping darkness all around them. “Turret” is an excavation of masculinity, love, loss and isolation, and a claustrophobic carnival of carnage, carrier pigeons, cribbage, whiskey, music, mischief and mayhem.

Matt Stone and Trey Parker’s Team America: World Police is debuting on the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format: more here.
For their cinematic follow up to South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut, writers and directors Trey Parker and Matt Stone decided it’d be a good idea to make a film with puppets. As we covered in a Film Stories podcast episode before, they would soon appreciate just how difficult it was to do.
The film that resulted from their labours was Team America: World Police, a brutally funny comedy action satire, with some memorable songs in the midst of it too. Originally released in 2004, to now mark the 20th birthday of the film, it’s got a 4K makeover, and is coming to the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format for the first time.
We’ve got Paramount to thank for this, who is issuing the film on 24th June 2024 on the format.

Famous for his performances in the thrillers Argo (2012) and Gone Girl (2014) and the dramas Pearl Harbor (2001) and The Last Duel (2021), Ben Affleck is not really known as a comedy actor. Even the viral pictures of him frustratingly looking nowhere present him as “sad”, building a strong, though unfair association with Affleck’s acting range.
However, back in 1997, the actor starred in a romantic dramedy, which can now seem ground-breaking, as here Affleck is obviously sad due to his unrequited love, just like in the memes, but, nevertheless, delivers quite a rare, convincing comedy performance.
The movie revolves around Holden and Banky, who are thick as thieves and are the two authors of a popular comic book. Their life-long friendship is strained by Holden’s growing feelings for Alyssa, whom they meet while promoting their new work.

Michael Bay is one of today's most recognizable filmmakers, known for his ability to deliver truly high-octane, spectacular movies with stunning production values. His films are always full of memorable action sequences, expert editing and cinematography, and coupled with big budgets, almost every movie Bay directs becomes a smash hit. This is especially true of the incredibly popular sci-fi franchise based on the Hasbro toy line, Transformers.
Although, after the release of the first film, the next four installments received increasingly negative reviews from critics, it was never about the visual effects. Moreover, Revenge of the Fallen, Dark of the Moon and Age of Extinction became some of the highest grossing films of all time, making over $1 billion globally.
These movies also featured enormous budgets, which today only Disney can boast when producing the (often ill-fated) projects for the MCU, but this did not prevent a 'controversy' surrounding the direction of Michael Bay.

While Josh Hartnett witnessed a notable spike in his career in the 2000s after starring in Pearl Harbor and Black Hawk Down, he kind of disappeared from the Hollywood limelight in the 2010s. But the actor finally marked his big comeback with Christopher Nolan’s critically and commercially acclaimed Oppenheimer, which saw him playing the Nobel Prize winner Ernest Lawrence.
And it appears the actor has no intentions of slowing things down, as for his next outing, he will be appearing in Avatar: The Last Airbender director’s upcoming new horror, Trap.

News of the impending crime thriller ‘Animals,’ slated to release on Netflix, surfaced last month. It was said that the Justice League alum would be at the helm, with Damon putting his acting chops on display.
What was being touted as another classic on-screen reunion between the long-time friends now boasts an intriguing (potential) addition to the cast.

The next film to be directed by Ben Affleck, the crime thriller Animals, could be about to star Jennifer Garner as well as Matt Damon.
Having released the Nike-makes-a-shoe drama Air last year, Ben Affleck is set to embark on his next directing project. He’s busy setting up Animals, a crime drama in which Matt Damon will star as a mayoral candidate whose son is kidnapped.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jennifer Garner is in talks to play Damon’s wife in the film. As previously reported, the otherwise undisclosed plot will contain plenty of intrigue – and perhaps a bit of violence: “Surrounded by plenty of enemies, political and otherwise, the husband and wife have no choice but to get their hands dirty in order to save their son,” is how THR describes it.
Over his career as a director, Affleck has tended to gravitate to crime thrillers of one sort or another.

On October 23, 1941, "Dumbo" soared into audience members' hearts. With his wide, bright blue eyes and floppy ears as big as his whole body, he quickly stood out as one of the cutest Disney characters ever. Sadly, the playful baby elephant is mocked by others, referred to as "Dumbo" instead of Jumbo Jr., and ridiculed for his oversized ears which give him the ability to fly. In the book "The Animated Man: A Life of Walt Disney," author Michael Barrier notes that the Walt Disney movies "Pinocchio" and "Fantasia" failed at the box office because World War II disrupted the European markets. A successful film was crucial for the studio's continued survival.
Working with a small budget, the filmmakers came up with what Bosley Crowther of The New York Times called "the most genial, the most endearing, the most completely precious cartoon feature film ever to emerge from the magical brushes of Walt Disney's wonder-working artists.

Josh Hartnett, once a teen sensation with films like The Virgin Suicides and Pearl Harbor under his belt, is making waves again. This time, he’s collaborating with acclaimed director M. Night Shyamalan. They’re currently working on a project in Canada, a film that’s been intriguingly described as a “psychological thriller set at a concert.”
Interestingly, the film was first titled Trap, but now it’s shooting under the temporary name Good Grades. While the final title remains a mystery, the anticipation is building. Shyamalan is not just directing; he’s also wearing the producer’s hat and funding the entire venture. It’s a bold move, especially since they’re filming amidst an ongoing actors’ strike. But Shyamalan, known for his dedication, has secured an agreement from SAG-AFTRA to proceed.

Director Tobe Hooper's 1974 low-budget feature "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" is not just loved by those who embrace the horror genre; it's one of the most cherished examples of truly independent cinema ever produced. Made for just tens of thousands of dollars, Hooper's film birthed a horror legend for the ages in Leatherface, as well as a franchise that is actually still going to this day. Since Marvel Studios officially announced the ‘Fantastic Four’ reboot movie that’ll introduce Marvel’s first family into the MCU, so much stuff has happened, but we are still pretty much in the fog. The movie was announced in December 2020, and in those almost three years, the only official pieces of information we have about the movie are its director and the release date.

The ‘WandaVision’ director, Matt Shakman, took over the project after the initially announced director, Jon Watts, walked out of the project, and Josh Friedman worked on the script before the entire project, as well as its casting process, was put on hold.
