In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week we take a different direction, looking into the stories of artists Jeremy Blake and Theresa Duncan. The Sound and Vision this week is slightly different, as the two selected people discussed are not necessarily known as filmmakers, even though there will be a cinematic connection that will be quite clear by the end of the article. In July 2007 visual artist Jeremy Blake walked into the sea never to return, a week after his girlfriend, game developer Theresa Duncan also took her own life. Vanity Fair published a big retrospective article about how and why two artists, ostensibly in the prime of their life, made such...

Remember “The Golden Suicides,” the tragic and mysterious “double suicide” story about Theresa Duncan and Jeremy Blake, two artists deeply in love, who both committed killed themselves one after the other? The story about beautiful, talented, up-and-coming artists who suddenly committed suicides under mysterious conditions consumed media (especially New York media where they were from for weeks)?

Nicolas Winding Refn’s follow-up to his Oscar-nominated Drive (should have been in the Best Picture and Director categories, but that’s a different story) sees him re-team with the brilliant Ryan Gosling for Only God Forgives, penned by Winding Refn.
We got an excellent first image of Gosling in the film at the start of this month, and now a host of new set photos has arisen, along with an intriguing development.
But before we go any further, the official synopsis:
“Bangkok. Ten years ago Julian killed a cop and went on the run. Now he manages a Thai boxing club as a front for a drugs operation. Respected in the criminal underworld, deep inside, he feels empty.
When Julian’s brother murders a prostitute the police call on retired cop Chang – the Angel of Vengeance. Chang allows the father to kill his daughter’s murderer, then ‘restores order...

"Only God Forgives," the latest from the bromantic duo of Nicolas Winding Refn and Ryan Gosling, is currently rolling in front of cameras, and while tabloids remain obsessed with how it's affecting the actor's relationship with Eva Mendes (rest easy folks, she's babysitting his dog, so they are still together) an eagle eyed reader (thanks Lena!) has given us a heads up to a rather interesting development.
While the snaps of a bloodied Gosling have been passed around already from the film, it seems a much more interesting detail has been overlooked: provocative helmer Gaspar Noe seems to be involved in some capacity on the movie. Of course, this isn't the first time the paths of Noe, Refn or Gosling have linked up. Throughout the promo rounds for "Drive," Refn talked about how he rang up the French director to ask him for tips on how to shoot the head...

Academy Award-nominated actor Ryan Gosling has probably had the best year of anybody in the movie industry this year. He kicked things off at the very end of 2010/start of 2011 with Blue Valentine, and then had a flawless final third of the year with Crazy, Stupid, Love., Drive, and The Ides of March all tremendously well received in the past few months.
Drive, in particular, found rapturous praise amongst critics and cinemagoers alike – and with very good reason – and Gosling is hotly tipped as an Oscar contender for his roles both in that and George Clooney’s The Ides of March.
Having had such a terrific end to 2011, things are already looking brilliant for 2012, and The Playlist report that the outlook may have got even better with the possibility emerging that Gosling might be joining the Bret Easton Ellis-penned The Golden Suicides.

Is there a chance that current Hollywood it boy Ryan Gosling could be working with super weird Argentine director Gaspar Noé (Irréversible, Enter the Void) on his next project? If you listen to author Bret Easton Ellis (“American Psycho”), there is. Here’s the story so far: Ellis has been working on a screenplay for a while, it’s called The Golden Suicides, and it’s about the true story of artist couple Jeremy Blake and Theresa Duncan, who killed themselves back in 2007, allegedly after harassment from the Church of Scientology. Originally Gus Van Sant was meeting to come on and direct Ellis’s screenplay, but that fell apart for one reason or another, so eventually the job went to Noé. Now that there is a director in the bag, it’s time to find a leading actor, and Ellis seems to have his sights on Gosling. Recently he’s been taking to his Twitter account to...

Ryan Gosling Rumored for Gaspar Noe’s ‘The Golden Suicides’; Carter Burwell Scoring ‘Gangster Squad’
When Ryan Gosling cited Gaspar Noé‘s Enter the Void as his favorite film of 2010, I was taken aback. Bear in mind that this was several months before he became a public buddy to Nicolas Winding Refn, but, at the time, yours truly was shocked that a man who occupied more covers of People magazine in two months than movies in an entire career would be so fond of a challenging, disturbing, 150-minute psychedelic trip from a controversial filmmaker. Twelve months later, it looks as though he’s taking his fandom a big step further.
We reported in May that Noé would possibly collaborate with Bret Easton Ellis on The Golden Suicides, a film penned by the American Psycho author centering on the, well, suicides of Jeremy Blake and Theresa Duncan. The French helmer has since jumped on board and is now courting actors — among them, Mr. Ryan Gosling. As Ellis tweeted,...

Over two years ago, we learned that American Psycho author and The Informers screenwriter Bret Easton Ellis was working with Good Will Hunting director Gus Van Sant to adapt The Golden Suicides, a Nancy Jo Sales article from Vanity Fair, about the 2007 double suicide of the artist and socialite couple Theresa Duncan and Jeremy Blake. However, Van Sant decided not to sit in the director's chair for the film allowing Enter the Void director Gaspar Noe to step up and helm the feature. Now, according to some recent Twitter activity from Ellis, there's a chance that Ryan Gosling could end up starring in the film. Read on. Before getting into the meat of this casting story, here's a refresher on the demise of this socialite couple: "Duncan and Blake formed a popular couple on the downtown New York and Venice, California, art scenes. She was one of the first videogame...

We can't say we were aware of the fact before, but it turns out that Bret Easton Ellis is quite the movie fan. His Twitter followers have, of late, been treated to streams of updates on the author's opinions of all the latest releases, with a little Oscar prognostication thrown in for good measure. We can't say we agree with all his opinions entirely, but it's certainly been entertaining, and we hope it continues. But Ellis' Twitter feed provided something more of a surprise overnight, with the writer revealing that one of the hottest stars of the moment is in talks to star in a script that he's written. Ellis has, for a few years now, been working on "The Golden Suicides" which tells the story of artists Jeremy Blake and Theresa Duncan, who killed themselves in 2007, allegedly after harassment from Scientologists. Gus Van Sant consulted on the project initially,...

Bret Easton Ellis (Less Than Zero, American Psycho) has been working on two new scripts in the past couple years. One is the very tantalizing The Golden Suicides, which chronicles the fall of art-world power couple Jeremy Blake and Theresa Duncan, who trapped themselves in a bubble of paranoia that burst only with their double suicide. The other is Bait, a movie about a kid who feeds a bunch of rich people to sharks. Guess which one is getting made first, and with Taxi Driver writer Paul Schrader at the tiller? THR [1] reports on this one and provides a quick synopsis, which reiterates that the film should be a particularly overt and gory class warfare tale. How so? The site says the script, ...follows a young man itching to take his revenge against the wealthy. The man, who works at a posh beach club, angles his way on to a...

The novelist and screenwriter Bret Easton Ellis — probably best-known for his controversial American Psycho and the equally-divisive Christian Bale film adaptation — most recently tried his hand at the cinema with The Informers, which, despite being based on his own collection of California-based short stories, ended up being a significant flop, both critically and commercially. (BoxOfficeMojo lists its worldwide box-office total at a stunningly low $382,000.)
However, back in 2009, Noé was selected to pen the screenplay for The Golden Suicides, an adaptation of Nancy Jo Sales’ 2008 article for Vanity Fair, which detailed the mysterious and unusual suicides of Jeremy Blake and Theresa Duncan. Ellis must have just put his finishing touches on the script, as it looks like Muse Productions (The Virgin Suicides, American Psycho, The Killer Inside Me) is currently trying to land a director for the project. Gaspar Noe's third feature, Into the Void, was one of the more divisive films of the past couple years, and easily one of my favorites. I've admired his peculiar and confrontational approach to storytelling, and the superb technical craft that underlies his narrative bravado. But those very qualities I admire, and the working methods they imply, make him the sort of director that isn't likely to take many work for hire gigs. Cue a bit of surprise, then, at the report that the director is being wooed to take the helm of The Golden Suicides, scripted by Bret Easton Ellis based on the true story of a superstar art world couple who perished in a bizarre double suicide. The same Screen Daily [1] piece that mentioned Matt Dillon being in talks for Inferno reveals that Gaspar Noe is one possible director for the film. Specifically, it says, Hanley and Gertner are...

It's an announcement to strike fear into even the most steel-hearted cinema-goer: Gaspar Noe is in talks to direct The Golden Suicides, from a screenplay by Brett Easton Ellis and Gus Van Sant. Not usually a director-for-hire, the idea that Noe (the controversial talent behind Seul Contre Tous, Irreversible and Enter the Void) could be employed on someone else's project is an odd one. Ellis' involvement could be a clue to the attraction however: the author's penchant for mixing the bleak, the violent and the absurd seeming a good fit for an artist who told a botched-rape-revenge drama backwards and made a three-hour FX extravaganza from the Pov of a dead guy.The Golden Suicides stems from a Vanity Fair article by Nancy Jo Sales, and is based on the true story of the double suicide of Jeremy Blake and Theresa Duncan, popular New York artists who, for reasons unknown,...

Gaspar Noe To Direct Bret Easton Ellis Script The Golden Suicides
Some potentially very interesting news here. The provocateur/mad man/genius Gaspar Noe, most recently known for fucking your eyeballs with a kaleidoscope in Enter the Void, could be getting ready to direct a script from a similarly mad yet genius provocateur, Bret Easton Ellis. The film will be called The Golden Suicides, and it is a script that Ellis has adapted from a Vanity Fair article of the same name. The article originally written by Nancy Jo Sales, concerns the story of Jeremy Thomas and Theresa Duncan who killed themselves after being harassed by Scientologists, even though the circumstances of their death are considered mysterious. Originally names like Gus Van Sant and Angelina Jolie were linked to the project but after two years the project went dead. Renee Zellweger is set to produce "Pillage" after picking up feature rights to Brantly Martin's novel of the same title. The actress will produce alongside PalmStar Entertainment's Kevin Frakes. Screenwriter John Krokidas ("Slo-Mo") will take the wheel and shooting is scheduled to start in New York City during the first half of next year. "Pillage" tells of four best pals living in Manhattan who break free from their dead-end lives by going in search of the perfect party in the downtown nightlife scene. Other PalmStar productions include "Lunar Park" which is based on the Bret Easton Ellis novel that Phil Alden Robinson is helming and "The Golden Suicides" based on the Vanity Fair article about Theresa Duncan and Jeremy Blake.

One of the more promising films on the horizon -- rather far on the horizon, unfortunately -- is The Golden Suicides, scripted by Bret Easton Ellis. The story of an art world superstar couple who perished in a double suicide originally came up as a co-authored project between Ellis and Gus Van Sant. Now we know that Van Sant is producing, not writing, but Ellis still hopes he'll be convinced to direct. To recap, The Golden Suicides is based on the lives of of ‘golden couple’ Theresa Duncan and Jeremy Blake. It’s some crazy stuff: a powerful creative couple (he was an artist, she a game designer and filmmaker) began to exhibit eccentric and downright bizarre behavior, requested ‘loyalty oaths’ of friends, complained of Scientologist persecution and eventually killed themselves within a week of each other. Duncan took pills; Blake walked into the Atlantic Ocean and never came out again.

Bret Easton Ellis has written six books (his seventh, Imperial Bedrooms, comes out next month), and all six have been optioned by Hollywood. Of those six, four were made into movies, and they run the gamut from iconic to underseen, acclaimed to lambasted. Each day this week, Ellis has tackled a different adaptation of his books for Movieline, giving his take on what worked, what didn't, and what went on behind the scenes.
So far this week, Movieline's talked to Bret Easton Ellis about movies made from his own books -- movies he often didn't script himself. Has anyone ever seen the following poster for Paul Thomas Anderson's Punch-Drunk Love before?
The Auteurs posted it as part of their "Movie Poster of the Week" series and it just caught my eye as incredibly striking.
The site writes that this Japanese poster is a chirashi, a word derived from the verb "chirasu" -- to scatter, disperse. Apparently this is part of a set of nine 7"x10" promotional handbills created for Punch-Drunk Love by Toho-Towa, the Japanese distributor. The designs are based on the lush colorfield "motion paintings" by Jeremy Blake that punctuate the film and add to its hallucinatory quality (watch the video to the right).
Tragically, Blake took his own life at the age of 35 by walking into the sea at Rockaway Beach. This came following personal set-backs and the 2007 suicide of his partner and fellow artist Theresa Duncan as reported in New York Magazine and Vanity Fair.

The only thing I would really wish different about this gorgeous abstract Japanese poster for Paul Thomas Anderson’s 2002 Punch-Drunk Love is that it were bigger. It is in fact a chirashi. Chirashi (the word is derived from the verb “chirasu”—to scatter, disperse) are small (7" x 10") promotional handbills that are distributed in Japanese movie theaters. Highly collectible among Japanese cinephiles, they are usually full color mini versions of the official release poster, with monochrome photos and text on the reverse, though the small format allows occasionally for affordable variations on the theatrical poster design. There is a terrific selection of chirashi collected, and available for purchase, here.

Alfonso Cuarón, director of the fantastic Children of Men, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, and Y tu mamá también, is gearing up for his next film, Gravity, a space thriller written by his son, Jonás.
A couple of weeks ago, it was reported that Angelina Jolie had passed on Wanted 2 in order to join the project. She was reportedly slated to play the sole survivor of a space mission, as well as her own daughter. Later that week, however, it looked as if she was looking at The Golden Suicides, penned by Bret Easton Ellis. In that project, she and James Franco would play the real-life couple Theresa Duncan and Jeremy Blake, who killed themselves after becoming paranoid regarding Scientologist persecution.
So where does that leave Gravity? Now the project has found its way to Warner Bros. as a 3D production and Robert Downey, Jr. is in negotiations to take the lead.

Could it be that Angelina Jolie backed out of Wanted 2 to star in a movie co-written by Gus Van Sant and Bret Easton Ellis? When word first came that Jolie was leaving the Wanted sequel - effectively killing it - the word was that she was lining up a movie called Gravity, a sci-fi piece by Alfonso Cuaron.
But maybe not. Premiere France (via The Playlist) says that she actually passed on a role in Gravity for the opportunity to star in The Golden Suicides with James Franco. We told you about that project before; it's a study of the final days of artists Theresa Duncan and Jeremy Blake, both of whom committed suicide under very unusual circumstances a couple years ago.
Leading to the rumor was a recent Tweet by Ellis: "Keep looking at the script...Angelina and Franco for Theresa and Jeremy?...It doesn't matter...I wrote it for them anyway.
