- His father is Indian and his mother German.
- Between the release of his film Hilary and Jackie (1998) and the moment he started working in Shopgirl (2005) as director, he worked in various film projects, all of which were at some point canceled for various reasons. Among those projects there was a biotopic of Cleopatra and a remake of the film Gambit (1966).
- He grew up in Hong Kong and has lived in London since he was 18.
- He has been a big fan of Philip Pullman's trilogy His Dark Materials (The Golden Compass; The Subtle Knife; The Amber Spyglass) since the first volume came out in 1995.
