Michael Mohan has taken to social media to express his dissatisfaction with how dark Immaculate looks on streaming platforms.
When it arrived in cinemas in March, Immaculate was the film that finally got 2024’s horror slate up and running. It’s a well-made horror flick, features an on-form Sydney Sweeney and was a lot of fun.
Given Sweeney’s perceived popularity with younger audiences, you might imagine that good word of mouth might have carried the film on to further successes following its streaming release. Instead, Immaculate seems to have hit a bit of a snag, with audiences complaining that the film is far too dark – as in, viewers aren’t able to see what’s going on.
The Hollywood Reporter has highlighted this issue, reporting that when one social media user stated that the film was ‘comically dark’, the film’s director actually took to X to reply.

Colin Farrell reprises his role as The Penguin, and it’s now confirmed that Sky will broadcast the series in the UK.
Spoilers for The Batman lie ahead.
Matt Reeves’ The Batman was among the top ten highest grossing films of 2022, the superhero epic expanding on the darker tone previously established in the Christopher Nolan trilogy while sticking more closely to the comics. One of its most striking performances was a near unrecognisable Colin Farrell as The Penguin.
It wasn’t long before HBO Max began developing a spin-off centering around the character, which will also serve as a bridge between The Batman and the upcoming sequel, which is currently scheduled to begin filming in 2025 for release in 2026.
Little is known about the plot of the series, although Farrell recently called it “incredibly violent“. The story will follow Oswald Copplebolt (aka The Penguin) and his rise to power. Farrell said...

Glen Powell is sharing his thoughts on playing the role of Batman and has some ideas.
In a new interview with GQ, Powell led a tour around the Warner Bros. Studio lot and came across the Batmobile section.
“I was always a Batman guy,” Powell said. “I would have a wild take on Batman. It definitely would not be like a Matt Reeves tone – it’d probably be closer to [Michael] Keaton.”
The reporter noted that Powell doesn’t have any interest in playing a superhero. When Powell found Keaton’s Batmobile, he said, “Oh, sick! See? This is the era.”
Powell does have a history in the DC Universe. In 2012, he was credited as Trader #1 in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises.
“I get my head smashed in by Bane in The Dark Knight Rises,” he said.

Another weekend, another bit of very bad news for the movie business. Memorial Day weekend has, historically, been a major frame for the box office, with Disney's "The Little Mermaid" remake pulling in $95.4 million last year. (That number grows to $117.5 million when accounting for the Monday holiday.) That's what we've come to expect, pandemic notwithstanding. Unfortunately, the dual threat of "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" and "The Garfield Movie" didn't prove to be much of a threat at all, as both films fell well short of expectations, leading to a downright terrible holiday weekend. Garfuriosa was, in the end, the direct opposite of last year's Barbenheimer phenomenon in every way imaginable.
Warner Bros.' "Furiosa" took the top spot on the charts, pulling in $26.3 million through Sunday, with that number growing to an estimated $32 million when accounting for Monday. Meanwhile, Sony Pictures' new animated "Garfield" film landed at number two...

Christopher and Jonathan Nolan aka the Nolan brothers have been an integral part of the movie industry for many years now. A director and a writer, they created 2008’s iconic The Dark Knight together, among other things — and according to Jonathan Nolan, it was that experience of working with his brother that helped him adapt Fallout. Otherwise, Prime Video’s latest sensation wouldn’t have existed now.
Fallout Creator Is Cautious with Big Franchises
At an FYC screening of Fallout’s first episode, Christopher Nolan interviewed his brother Jonathan about the new TV show.
He asked about his brother’s approach to adapting a massive and well-established franchise, specifically, a video game one, to small screens, and the writer admitted he was very self-conscious with it.
“There is room to do some writing in there. I think there’s always extraordinary respect for the Harry Potter films, for Lord of the Rings films…...

‘Immaculate’ Director Addresses Criticism of Film’s Dark Visuals on Streaming: “It’s a Real Problem”
The filmmaker behind the recent Sydney Sweeney horror movie Immaculate is addressing criticism about scenes from the film appearing to be overly dark when viewed on certain streaming platforms.
Michael Mohan took to X (formerly Twitter) on Monday after a social media user complained that the Neon film’s visuals were “comically dark” and shared screenshots showing that it was difficult to see what was happening as the movie was streaming. In his response, Mohan made it clear that he empathized with the concerns and had not intended for the film to look so dark.
“I know, man,” Mohan replied. “This was absolutely not done intentionally. We have no control over the compression specs of each platform.”
He continued, “It’s a real problem that truly bums me out, and after comparing them all, iTunes is the closest to what we wanted / brighter than the rest.”
I know, man. This was absolutely not done intentionally.

Director Denis Villeneuve hit it big this year with the release of his sci-fi epic Dune: Part Two. Based on Frank Herbert’s iconic novel series, the film followed the story of feudal noble families in the future. It is one of the great pleasures of life to acknowledge that the current generation of movie buffs and fans of classic IPs are living in the golden era of Hollywood. Whether itʼs a renaissance of comic book adaptations, a complete reinvention of the James Bond IP through Daniel Craig, or the live-action re-enactment of universes crafted by George R.R. Martin, J.R.R. Tolkien, and J.K. Rowling, the 21st century brings with it an epoch of unbridled, uncorrupted, and unstoppable creativity.

Christopher Nolan’s thriller/historical drama from 2023, Oppenheimer, is a based-on-real-events story, and be it Cillian Murphy’s J. Robert Oppenheimer in the lead role or Gary Oldman’s President Harry Truman in a supporting one — everyone made sure to make it seem as realistic as possible.
But what if some of the scenes from the film never really happened in the first place?

As it turns out, it seems like one of the most iconic scenes in the entire movie as Truman just may have stemmed from a figment of Nolan’s imagination. Or, to be more precise, it may have never happened in the first place the way it was depicted, and the filmmaker just may have improvised it.
Why? Well, simply put: Because historical accounts recall it somewhat differently.

Can you believe it has been over two whole decades since we first encountered the perplexing tale of Leonard (Guy Pearce), the compelling Natalie (Carrie-Anne Moss), and the intricate structural puzzle that is Christopher Nolan’s groundbreaking film, Memento?
This masterpiece, a hallmark of neo-noir storytelling, isn’t just memorable for its narrative acrobatics; it marks the auspicious second film debut of Nolan in the major league of filmmakers. Just as Leonard used tattoos to etch pivotal clues onto his skin, Memento indelibly inked itself into our cultural consciousness.

With numerous accolades, including Oscar nominations for Best Original Screenplay and Best Film Editing, there’s no question that Memento is a fascinating subject for cinephiles. With the film’s commercial success, however, Nolan was surprised by the reception it received.

The bleak blockbuster that is "Dune: Part Two" finished up Denis Villeneuve's "Dune" duology in spectacular fashion. After 2021's "Dune" provided a more muted, subtle introduction to the world originally created by author Frank Herbert in his 1965 novel, the sequel delivered epic action, depicting Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet)'s transformation into the messianic leader of the Fremen, whom he leads in battle against the evil House Harkonnen. While there's a marked difference between the two movies in terms of pace, one thing that remained consistent was Villeneuve's meticulous attention to detail.
The director didn't want outside interpretations interfering with the design of "Dune" or its sequel, and implored his creative team to refer to Herbert's book for inspiration. But that didn't mean the look of "Dune" and "Part Two" came exclusively from the book. Production designer Patrice Vermette consulted a wide array of sources, leading to sets...

The Barbenheimer phenomenon was something that everyone talked about last summer when two very important movies came out. One of them was Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, a movie that showed us how great feminism can work on screen, while the other was Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, starring Cillian Murphy and Emily Blunt, a movie that showed us the terror of atomic energy. Both these movies were released at the same time and many people believed that they would cancel each other out and create a rivalry, but what happened was something completely different!
Fans of both movies united and this led to the birth of the Barbenheimer phenomenon, which brought in a substantial amount of money for cinemas last year, as Barbie fans called for people to go watch Oppenheimer, while Oppenheimer fans urged people to go watch Barbie. The summer of 2023 was encapsulated in two films at the same time: Oppenheimer by Christopher Nolan and Barbie by Greta Gerwig. Since they came out the same weekend, moviegoers were treated to a sort of double feature.
These two blockbusters not only dominated the world last year, but they also reignited our collective desire for a silver-screen experience. Both films exceeded box office expectations, with Margot Robbie’s film enchanting its way to a $1.4 billion global haul, while Oppenheimer’s Oscar-winning narrative netted a whopping $951.4 million.

But Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos recently stirred quite the conversation with his belief that these films could have shone just as brightly on streaming platforms. One can’t help but wonder: How different would the scenario be if these cultural phenomena had debuted on Netflix rather than the cinema’s big screen?

Martin Scorsese’s war with Marvel seems to be over as filmmaker George Lucas recently revealed that the director might have eased his opinions about the MCU. The Departed filmmaker came under fire back in 2019 when he compared Marvel with theme park rides and said that they were not cinema, sparking controversy and a bunch of memes.
While the filmmaker was commenting on the lack of originality in Hollywood and how the only films getting made were superhero films, many fans took issue with him insulting their beloved franchise. However, the director seemed to have calmed down about the issue, according to George Lucas.

Ted Sarandos is commenting on the box office success of Oppenheimer, Barbie, and their Netflix series Baby Reindeer.
In a new interview, the Netflix CEO said that the films starring Margot Robbie and Cillian Murphy would’ve been just as big on the streaming platform.
“Both of those movies would be great for Netflix. They definitely would have enjoyed just as big an audience on Netflix,” Sarandos said in an interview with the New York Times. “And so I don’t think there’s any reason to believe that certain kinds of movies do or don’t work. There’s no reason to believe that the movie itself is better in any size of screen for all people. My son’s an editor. He is 28 years old, and he watched Lawrence of Arabia on his phone.”
Barbie and Oppenheimer, directed by Greta Gerwig and Christopher Nolan, respectively, were big box office winners.

When "Memento" arrived in 2000, it was a big deal. This small indie film that cost $9 million to make became a big hit, spurned on by strong word of mouth that kept talking up the movie's narrative trick: it moved backwards. Rather than tell a straightforward story, Christopher Nolan's mystery-thriller runs in reverse, with each new scene giving us insight into a scene we just watched. Little by little, we piece together the mystery, just like the film's main character, played by Guy Pearce.
If you need a refresher, here's the gist: Pearce's character, Leonard "Lenny" Shelby, has anterograde amnesia — he's unable to retain new memories. The condition arose when he was injured during an attack that resulted in his wife's murder. Now, Lenny uses clues he pieces together in order to find (and kill) the man who murdered his wife. But of course, nothing is quite as it seems,...

This year, acclaimed British filmmaker Christopher Nolan has finally received his first Oscar for his work on Oppenheimer and everyone agreed that it was deserved, but also that it should not have been his first Oscar, seeing how many masterful movies Nolan had made before Oppenheimer. In that aspect, the filmmaker officially became a part of history and it shouldn’t come as a surprise that many of his colleagues speak very highly of him and his achievements over the years.
Although modern cinema is much more diverse than it was decades ago, and there are several equally innovative and important approaches to filmmaking, we cannot deny that Nolan definitely changed cinema. Jonathan Nolan is no stranger to adaptions of popular media, with the writer starting his career when his brother, Christopher Nolan, adapted his short story into the feature film Memento. Over the years, Nolan has contributed to his brother’s adaptation of Batman and also helmed a television adaptation of the cult-classic film Westworld.

Despite a historically accurate reading of Hollywood’s storied past, great directors and filmmakers make it their business to break and set records with their career’s work. Christopher Nolan is invariably one such director who continues to defy the laws of physics in his films just as he manipulates the laws of human psychology when it comes to breaking box office records.
However, it is rare to find a combination of good filmmakers with complete artistic and creative taste who don’t eventually fall prey to the studio system. Return on investments and profit guides the business models of modern-day Hollywood and to keep making films, it becomes imperative that directors, creatives, and actors all fall in line with the company policy.

It has been 84 years since Catwoman made her debut in the DC Universe; she has been an influential character within the Batman franchise. Over 8 decades, Selina Kyle has been showcased as a cat burglar, a villain, sometimes a hero, and having a romantic interest in The Caped Crusader. Since the Batman franchise has been rebooted over the years, several big names have portrayed The Cat, and each one of them has brought something new to the table, adding to the Cat Burglar’s antihero legacy.

The big-screen adaptations of Ian Fleming’s James Bond have never really been known for being faithful to their source material. Apart from some initial releases, such as On Her Majesty’s Secret Service and Thunderball, most films haven’t gone past the title of the books when it comes to borrowing material for the silver screen.
As a result, after rumors emerged claiming that Christopher Nolan was in talks to make a faithful adaptation of Fleming’s work, fans were elated. But as the story goes, these claims turned out to be false. The cape was once the kingmaker. But the movie stars at the top of studios’ most-wanted lists today have largely avoided cinematic universes. Instead of being pulled up to the A-list with a call from Marvel or DC (like earlier breakouts Chris Evans, Gal Gadot and Jason Momoa), today’s top talents — according to THR’s survey of executives, managers and agents — were anointed by auteur directors. Austin Butler was tapped by Baz Luhrmann for Elvis, while Denis Villeneuve gave nearly a third of this list their first franchise movie with his Dune features.
Today’s young stars are also less formulaic than their predecessors of just a decade ago, whose indie debuts or tiny Oscar turns were quickly followed by IP-backed film series. They are more agnostic, too, moving easily among studio filmmaking, indie efforts and television. Unlike past eras, there’s also not a single “type” dominating the group.

Christopher Nolan has constantly had to adapt as a filmmaker. The 53-year-old director has helmed successful blockbusters including 'Inception' and 'Oppenheimer' but explained that he has never worked on any of the ideas he had growing up because of the ever-changing nature of the movie industry. In an interview with Empire magazine, Nolan said: "As a young man, I had a list of, however many I'd worked out, 12 or 13 films... I had a lot of ideas and a lot of very specific things that I was going to do. And I look back and I haven't done any of them; they all changed."When you plan ahead too far in the movie business, you're not taking into account the shifting sands of culture under your feet... (Cinema) evolves. And part of your job as a filmmaker is to be open to being part of that evolution.

The Dark Knight trilogy saw Gary Oldman step into the role of a good guy. This was a change of pace for the actor, who was used to playing villains throughout his career.
But when he looked at Heath Ledger’s performance as The Joker, Oldman felt it wasn’t too unlike the characters he used to play himself in his younger years.

Out of all the roles he played, Oldman once admitted that he found portraying Commissioner Jim Gordon among his most difficult. Commissioner Gordon was as moral as they came in Christopher Nolan’s Batman series. But Oldman confided that playing someone so good was harder than it looked.

Kevin Conroy has portrayed Batman more often than anyone else, appearing in a variety of animated films, TV series, and, of course, video games. Part of what made the late actor so iconic was his distinctive way of delivering the richness of dynamic dialogue that became essential to the Batman character.
