Tommy Wirkola and the ABC TV show Once Upon a Time have a lot to answer for…
Since the debut of the TV show and more importantly Wirkola’s movie Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, there have been more and more fairytale, and in particular Hansel & Gretel-related, flicks hitting DVD, I’ve already reviewed the god-awful Hansel & Gretel: Warriors of Witchcraft and now we have the Tribeca Films distributed stoner horror-comedy Hansel & Gretel Get Baked (aka Hansel & Gretel and the 420 Witch). Which has, for reason only known to the UK distributor and undoubtedly supermarket buying managers everywhere, been re-titled Grimm Tales for its UK release on May 4th.

Hansel and Gretel Get Baked
Written by David Tillman
Directed by Duane Journey
USA, 2013
Not long after Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton reimagined the fairytale duo for the Twilight generation, Hansel and Gretel Get Baked offers a marginally more laidback interpretation on the fable for those more inclined towards other slacker duos like Jay and Silent Bob or Harold and Kumar. Director Duane Journey trades in traditional Gothic horror sensibilities for a stoned-eye view of suburbia, priding home-grown fantasy over full-blown horror.
If this is squared for the stoner market, then it’s peculiar for the director to take a cautionary tale about the dangers of stepping into a stranger’s house and switch the goodies from candy to marijuana. Twin Peaks star Lara Flynn Boyle plays the wicked witch, whose effort to lure unsuspecting teens into her gingerbread house is rewarded with the succubus-like theft of their youthfulness. When...

The 2012 horror-comedy film Hansel & Gretel Get Baked offers a modern weed-and-gore-friendly take on the famous sibling fairy tale.
Teenage brother and sister Hansel and Gretel (Molly Quinn of TV’s Castle and Michael Welch of the Twilight saga) are shaken out of suburbia when an intense new marijuana strain named “Black Forest” takes Los Angeles by storm. When Gretel’s stoner boyfriend mysteriously disappears while on a run to buy more drugs, the siblings follow his breadcrumbs to the house of a little old lady (Lara Flynn Boyle, Men in Black II) who has a very green thumb. When the seemingly sweet woman turns out to be a drug-dealing, drug-growing evil witch who cooks and eats her wasted patrons for their youth, it’s bake or get baked for Hansel and Gretel. Hansel, he’s so hot right now. Well, actually, it’s not just Hansel, but Hansel and his sister Gretel who are so hot right now, appearing in entirely too many 2013 movies. I already shared my thoughts on the surprisingly delicious Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, but aside from that you’ve got cut-rate knock-off imitators like Hansel & Gretel: Warriors of Witchcraft, Hansel & Gretel, and Hansel and Gretel in 3D. Nice try with the Asylum technique guys, but if you’re going to try and capitalize on another film’s popularity, at least steal the topic and do something unique – like Hansel & Gretel Get Baked.
Sure, Hansel and Gretel are still facing off against an evil witch, but this time Gretel and her pothead boyfriend start the trouble by entering the house of a drug-dealing old lady who later reveals she’s been draining the youth out of unluckier customers who cross the evil broom-rider.

*a few minor spoilers are here. Director: Duane Journey. Writer: David Tillman. Cast: Lara Flynn Boyle, Michael Welch, Molly Quinn, and Cary Elwes. It is often interesting to see how a film markets itself. Hansel & Gretel Gets Baked makes note of producer Mark Morgan's attachment to the Twilight series of films. His name is mentioned instead of the cast as seen left. However, Hansel & Gretel Gets Baked is not really for the Twilight crowd. There are no glittery vampires here, nor werewolf lovers. Instead, there is almost an equal amount of both comedy and horror. Jokes abound and so does the gore. Meanwhile, actress Lara Flynn Boyle anchors the film expertly with her character, the notorious witch of German fairytales. All of the performances are solid, but this film will be remembered for its hilarity and light-hearted mood. Gretel (Molly C. Quinn) likes her weed and so does her stoner boyfriend,...

There seems to be a glut of Hansel and Gretel movies coming out this year. Tommy Wirkola's Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters is releasing in theatres January 25th. As well, the Asylum has released their version, Hansel and Gretel, earlier this month and there is another film being released shortly titled Hansel and Gretel: The Warriors of Witchcraft. However, Duane Journey's Hansel and Gretel Get Baked looks to be the best of this cadre of films. Hansel and Gretel Get Baked is a horror film with a few bloody moments as seen in the film's first trailer. In the clip, one teenager eats too much from a pot laced gingerbread house. The witch, played by Lara Flynn Boyle, takes advantage of this youth with a handsaw. But, Gretel (Molly C. Quinn) comes to his rescue. This reversal of a damsel in distress storyline will likely entertain most horror fans.

Arriving to Lara Flynn Boyle’s trailer outside Gower Studios in Hollywood, California, this writer chatted with the Emmy-nominated actress regarding her character of the witch “Agnes” in the then-shooting feature Hansel & Gretel Get Baked.
Written by first-time feature screenwriter David Tillman, directed by Duane Journey, and starring Boyle, Twilight actor Michael Welch as “Hansel,” Molly C. Quinn as “Gretel,” and Bianca Saad, the film (formerly known as Black Forest: Hansel and Gretel & The 420 Witch) revolves around an old crone who lives in Pasadena, California, who lures teens into her house with a special blend of marijuana in order to eat the adolescents in an effort to maintain her own youth and beauty.
Shooting day nineteen of twenty-one, Boyle, in a robe and fresh out of the extensive prosthetic makeup required of her role (courtesy of Vincent Guastini and his company Vgp Effects & Design), politely asked if I would mind if she smoked.

Prepare for the high of your life! And no, this has nothing to do with that Hansel And Gretel: Witch Hunters movie! This is something completely different. And hilarious by the way! Described as a horror-comedy (apparently that shit really exists), Hansel and Gretel & The 420 Witch comes from director Duane Journey and is actually some kind of a crazy spin on the classic German fairy tale. Today we have some cool images, poster and the first trailer for the whole thing, hope you’ll like it!
Some say the story is completely crazy, but I say that’s quite logical thing when you have one weird witch who uses pot instead of candy to lure teenagers into her home!

The Countess Bathory is in film again and this time she stars as a witch in Black Forest: Hansel and Gretel and the 420 Witch. This film involves two youths who are tempted with some great ganja into a vulnerable situation. Here, the witch lulls them into a drug induced sleep and her plan becomes obvious. She will sacrifice Hansel and Gretel so that she can remain young forever. Sound familiar? This latest horror film might loosely be based on the Countess Bathory who is still one of the most infamous female serial killers of all times. She also lured youth into her chamber, drained their blood and then tried to use their last drops as a youth enhancer. Will Black Forest: Hansel and Gretel and the 420 Witch enhance this legend? More details on the film are below.

It’s fairy tale adaptation madness out there. We’ve got two new TV series exploring a conglomeration of iconic tales, two Snow White movies going head-to-head and much more. How to stand out in such a whirlwind of retellings? Throw a pot-peddling witch into the mix. Director Duane Journey’s Hansel and Gretel & the 420 Witch is a modern retelling of the beloved fairytale which finds a rebellious Gretel (Molly C. Quinn) and her clean-cut brother Hansel (Michael Welch) going up against a local witch (Lara Flynn Boyle) that lures her victims in using a new blend of marijuana called Black Forest Night. Not only did we get the chance to talk to Hansel himself about working on the film, but we’ve got five exclusive stills to boot! Check it all out for...

Directed by Duane Journey, Black Forest: Hansel And Gretel & The 420 Witch updates the Grimm Brothers classic fairytale to modern-day Pasadena. Except now the forest is an immense indoor hydroponic marijuana farm. So naturally some liberties have been taken with the existing text. Its being described as a bit Edgar Wright and a bit Pineapple Express but very gory. The film is "about a brother and sister who battle a witch that uses a special drug to lure teenagers into her suburban home where she devours them to maintain her youth and beauty." Written by David Tillman and produced by Dark Highway Films, Black Forest stars Molly Quinn (Castle), Michael Welch (Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse), Lara Flynn Boyle (Twin Peaks, Men In Black II) and introduces Bianca Saad...
