This is a huge week for horror fans, as the highly anticipated Halloween box set arrives from Anchor Bay and Scream Factory to officially set the mood for autumn and begin the countdown to the spookiest day of the year. There are also several other fantastic Blu-ray and DVD collections joining the ranks of Michael Myers as well, including Elvira, Jigsaw and Pazuzu!
One of my personal favorites, The Innocents, is also getting the hi-def treatment from Criterion this week, as well as the late 80’s cult classic StageFright, which is being released by Blue Underground. There are also a few new films getting released, including Wer, Found and the sci-fi thriller The Signal. Fans of Sonno Profondo will also be able to pick up a copy of the film on VHS this week too.
Spotlight Titles:
Elvira’s Movie Macabre: The Coffin Collection (Entertainment One, DVD)
26 horrifying films on 13 DVD’s!

Deborah Kerr gets haunted in The Innocents.
The genuinely frightening, exquisitely made 1961 supernatural Gothic horror film The Innocents stars Deborah Kerr (Black Narcissus) as an emotionally fragile governess who comes to suspect that there is something very, very wrong with her precocious new charges.
A psycho-sexually intensified adaptation of Henry James’s classic The Turn of the Screw, co-written by Truman Capote (Breakfast at Tiffany’s) and directed by Jack Clayton (Room at the Top), The Innocents is a triumph of narrative economy and technical expressiveness, from its chilling sound design to the stygian depths of its widescreen cinematography by Freddie Francis (The Elephant Man).
Criterion’s Blu-ray and two-disc DVD editions contain the following features:
• New 4K digital restoration, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray
• Audio commentary featuring cultural historian Christopher Frayling

Look out, Oscars. Oprah's coming for you. After being shut out last year for Lee Daniels' The Butler, she's returning with a vengeance, and she's armed with even more black history to slap upside your head. It's the story of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and Oprah is demanding that you better recognize one of the most pivotal figures in American history. Paramount Pictures has announced that Oprah Winfrey, who is producing Selma, will also be taking a supporting role. The film, which traces Dr. King's fight for voting rights that led to a historical march upon Selma, Alabama, adds Winfrey to a cast that includes David Oyelowo (as King), Tom Wilkinson, Carmen Ejogo and Tim Roth. Winfrey is playing Anne Lee Cooper, a major civil rights leader who fought in Selma for her voting rights. She was known for challenging Sheriff James Clark face-to-face, and decking him...

Philadelphia — Police say a man killed after gunfire rang out during the filming of an amateur rap video in Philadelphia wasn't shot as was originally thought but died from being struck by a car.
Police say the man tripped and fell and then was accidentally run over by a car as a crowd of more than 100 people panicked and tried to flee the scene Thursday night.
Homicide Capt. James Clark says officers first thought the man had been shot in the head but no gunshot wounds were found during an autopsy.
After the shots rang out, police took into custody three men who had guns. Those men may face charges.
Police say the driver of the car cooperated with authorities and is unlikely to be charged.

Oscar-winning editor Jim Clark's hilarious memoir offers valuable insights into an often overlooked aspect of cinema
Numerous directors and a fair number of cinematographers have written autobiographies, but although there are useful books on the art and craft and editing, the only memoir I've come across by a film editor is the eye-opening When the Shooting Stops... the Cutting Begins by Ralph Rosenblum, the New York editor who saved Mel Brooks's The Producers and Woody Allen's Annie Hall from catastrophe. It appeared in 1979, and towards the end of it Rosenblum says of his trade: "The profession selects in favour of caution, timidity, self-abnegation, tact, 'a diplomacy', says British editor James Clark, 'which would normally put us straight into parliament'." Now in retirement, Jim Clark has put aside his diplomacy to write a revealing, funny, devastatingly frank account of a lifetime spent editing film.
Unlike many people in films,...
